2009

PMR 2009

MBSSKL had astounding results for 2009. The average grade, 1.64, was the second best in the school history. Only in 2006, the average grade was better – 1.62. However, the percentage of straight A’s and those with 7A’s or 8 A’s broke all records. The percentage of straight A’s was 37.38, indicating that a staggering 77 out of the 206 students had all A’s. This achievement put MBS as the third best school in KL in terms of straight A’s. Also nearly half of the students scored 7A’s or more. The graphs below show average grade trend over ten years and the percentage of straight A’s from 2000-2009.
On a subject basis, the percentage of A’s for Bahasa Melayu, English, Science, Mathematics, Geography and History are at their historical best. The astounding PMR results for 2009 grabbing two awards from the State Education Department – Outstanding Controlled or Full Boarding School and the third best school in KL in terms of straight A’s. A big thank you to all teachers, parents and stakeholders who have strifed and supported MBS to go this far. Go Forward MBS

2010

STPM 2010

It is another historical best in the STPM 2010 results for MBSSKL. MBSSKL emerged as the top school in KL as we received the largest number postcard invitations to apply to Universiti Sains Malaysia, the nation’s Apex University which only accepts students with a CGPA of 2.67 or better. One of our students, Ling Xiao Chun scored 5As with all 13 papers scoring distinction, making him the top 4 student in the nation. Most of the science subjects showed marked improvement but some arts subjects show slight deterioration. However, one Arts subject stands out amongst all subjects, i.e. Visual Arts. All the four students scored an A!. The STPM of 2010 also saw a full 100% passes, with all students having at least a C. Compared to national average MBSSKL is far ahead. More than 50% of the students scored a CGPA of 3.0 or more, compared to only 23.19% nationally. The school CGPA of 2.82 is also the best since 2002, placing it as the top 47 schools in the nation for STPM. More than 80% of MBSSKL students are expected to obtain places in the local universities. Go forward MBS!

PMR 2010

PMR 2010 is another historical best for MBSSKL. The average grade of the school, a measure of the overall results is at 1.59, the best so far. Most of the subjects also were at the historical best. Bahasa Melayu is at the historical best in terms of percentage of A’s. History, Geography, Mathematics, Science and Industrial Arts are the historical best in terms of average grade and percentage of A’s. Nevertheless, the percentage of straight A’s has fallen from 37.38% to 21.79% mainly due to Mandarin, in which many would-be straight A’s students got a B. This subject fared one of the worst in its history with the percentage of A’s at mere 15.49% compared to 48.75% previously. A post mortem will be held to gauge this decline and serious steps will be taken to alleviate the problems identified.

2011

STPM 2011

It was another fantastic year for the STPM 2011. Out of the 12 students with 5A’s in the country, two were from MBSSKL – Eric Khong and Lim May Teng. A total of 4 students had a CGPA of 4.0 – Eric Khong, MayTeng, Anthony Yew and Lee Pei Kiat. The school’s CGPA at 2.75, though lower than last year’s 2.82, was still one of the best amongst KL schools. Compared to national figures, MBSSKL is far ahead. Nationally only 23.9% of the students scored a CGPA of 3.0 or above compared to nearly of students in MBSSKL. Majority of the subjects saw improvement with the most significant for Physics. This subject had a 100% pass and nearly a quarter of the students scored As, a historical feat. The graphs show the performance of the school from 2001-2011 and also its performance compared to national figures.

PMR 2011

MBSSKL remained at the top ten position in KL/Putrajaya for the PMR 2011. With an average grade of 1.67, it could not match the historical best of 1.59 for the year 2010. Overall, the percentage of straight A’s at 23% was higher than that of 2010 and the second best in the history of MBSSKL. Also 41.4% of the students scored 7A’s or 8A’s. The graphs below show the average grade of the school, the percentage of straight A’s and 7A’s or 8A’s for the years 2000-2011

MBSSKL - CLUSTER SCHOOL

MBSSKL was declared as a cluster school of excellence on 2 April 2008. There are three niche areas to be developed under this program: ICT, English and Chess. Numerous activities have been held since then and we are proud that there have been commendable achievement in these niche areas.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

After three years as a Cluster School, MBSSKL has shown great achievements the three niche areas. MBSSKL is now a 5 star Smart School under the MOE’s Smart School Quality Standards. Most of the schools in this category are government sponsored Smart Schools, but yet MBSSKL made it to this category with only partial assistance from the government. It continues to be bench marked by local and foreign schools in the implementation of ICT.

In English, MBSSKL won the prestigious UIA national debating championship in 2010 and again the inter parlimentary debate in KDU a few weeks later. Three boys have continuously shine in the debating championship: Michael Fork, Viknaraja and Pavitharan. This year (2011), though, MBSSKL failed to defend the crown in the UIA debating championship (we were placed fifth). Viknaraja was voted as the best speaker in the KDU Inter parlimentary debate held in June 2011.

In Chess, MBSSKL boys formed the largest group in the KL team that went for the MSSM competition in Penang this year (2011). Our boys helped KL win the U-15 title and the runners up title in the U-18 category. Yeap Eng Chiam, the internationally rated player, continue to bring glory to the school. He won the Penang Chess League championship in 2010 and was voted Best Penang Chess Association member (a membership he joined when he was young)

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

11 February 2009 was a day to remember as a cluster school. Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Arshad, a former Director General of Education and now the head of the Cluster School Advisory Panel made a visit to MBSSKL together with officials from the Ministry of Education and State Education Department. The whole entourage was very impressed with the development and achievement of our niche areas – ICT, Chess and English Language. Tan Sri made a few suggestions for the improvement of our niche areas:

(a) MBSSKL must form partnership with good schools overseas.(b) The option of allowing the students to take O Level English should be explored(c) The benefits of the niche area should reach as many students as possible(d) Single session should not be construed as only extension of morning session only. Students must be involved in meaningful programs in the afternoon.(e) Momentum for improvement must be maintained

CO-CURRICULUM ACTIVITIES OF MBSSKL

Co-curricular activities in MBSSKL take place before school, or after school. They complement what students are learning in school and support intellectual, emotional, social, moral, creative and physical development. There are three main aspects of co-curriculum, which are clubs and society, uniform unit, and sport clubs. Participation in co-curricular activities benefits students in many ways.

While musical activities focus on developing patience, sports activities generally help to improve coordination. But in general, it is found that those who take part in co-curricular activities also have a higher rate of academic success. Thousands of cases are found where co-curricular activities have increased students’ motivation along with their attendance.

MY SCHOOL MBSSKL

Methodist Boys’ Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur (MBSSKL) is a secondary school located in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was founded in July 1897 by William Kensett, a Methodist missionary.  Today, MBSSKL still maintains many aspects of the ethos of a missionary school. Over the years, it has been known as a premier missionary school noted for its strength in student character development and academic achievement.

The school badge consists of the words M.B.S. and a banner in (Yellow) against a background shield of Azure (Blue). Azure (Blue) represents the fact that all humanity shares the same sky and a sense of togetherness. It represents the harmony of all the races in MBSSKL, and that the importance of each individual is recognized. Yellow represents the excellence for which we are encouraged to strive for.

The school crest, as depicted in the graphic on the left, has changed somewhat throughout the years especially on the removal of a “white cross” upon which the text “MBS” sits. The removal of the cross was catered to the sensitivities of Muslim students and teachers and in line with tolerance and mutual respect for major religions in the country.
The motto, “Ora et Labora” means “Pray and Work” in Latin.

MISSION STATEMENT
